25 November – International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women
‘International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women’ is a day to raise awareness of violence against women and it is commemorated every 25 November. Violence against women is one of the most widespread human rights abuses all over the world.
The origins of this day go back to 25 November 1960, when three sisters, Patria Mercedes Mirabal, María Argentina Minerva Mirabal and Antonia María Teresa Mirabal, were assassinated in the Dominican Republic on the orders of the Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo. The Mirabal sisters were political activists who opposed the dictatorship of Trujillo. Since 1981, women activists have commemorated a day against violence on the anniversary of the deaths of the three Dominican sisters. On 17 December 1999, the UN General Assembly designated 25 November as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
