The Case of Beatriz From El Salvador

Mexico City, Mexico, 01 June 2013

Declaration

The members of the Socialist International Women (SIW), aware, informed and concerned about the situation of the woman known as ‘Beatriz’ in the Republic of El Salvador, issue the following:

We respectfully urge the Government of the Republic of El Salvador, who as a state party to the American Convention since 23 June 1978, comply with the six measures ordered by the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, dated 29 May 2013, in order to comply with its international obligations regarding human rights and thus ensure adequate protection of the right to life and personal integrity of Beatriz, rights enshrined in Articles 4 and 5 of the American Convention.

Furthermore, we call for the respect that all states should have to the rights of all women in the world who suffer from impairment of such rights – rights which are enshrined in various international instruments, such as the right to life, to personal integrity, to the full exercise of their sexual and reproductive rights, access to health, the right to decide about their bodies, access to justice and a life free from violence in both the public and private sectors.
